Grow Cannabis the Basics

Grow Cannabis

Hi everyone!! In this article, I will give a fairly detailed description of cannabis, the methods of growing cannabis and the expense involved in growing it. At the bottom you will find specific crops and much more.

The first thing to know about growing cannabis is that cannabis has various types of plants with different genetics and each one has its own characteristic, some were created by man and others are crosses of hundreds of years.

Genetics fall into three groups sativa, indica and ruderalis. As seen in the photo.grow cannabisCannabis sativas: they are tall plants with the shape similar to a Christmas tree, they reach a height of 4 meters or a little more outside while at home it depends on the set up we use to grow them but usually no more than two meters. They are plants that come from very hot places and withstand high temperatures well.

The derivatives of this plant (smoke and flowers etc ..) have a more relaxing effect than euphoric for the concentrations of thc, cbd and cbn which are three of the many active ingredients in cannabis.

They develop more flower than resin, but this is not always the case.

Cannabis indicates: it is a plant that takes the form more of a bush with many leaves and usually stays low no more than one meter and something; it is a plant that does well even in temperate climates but not too cold.

Its derivatives (smoke weed etc.) have a more euphoric effect than a relaxing or cerebral effect, always due to the different concentrations of the three elements or more, they develop a lot of resin and for this reason they are suitable for making smoke which is mostly resin .

Cannabis ruderalis: they are the plants grown in very cold places, commonly the wild ones, they are like flowers quite high up to 60 cm; This type of plant is not used by growers for its poor yield except to cross them and form auto flowering dwarfs.

Then there are, in addition to the genetics, the crosses of sativas with indicas having 30 indica / 70 sativa for example.

We can say that there are many and with concentration of all types, to explain how these genetics are it would take a book for the amount of information, but it is enough to know that by crossing you get plants with a lot of high resin or plants with little low resin. in short words.

Crossing cannabis sativa/indicates e ruderalis dwarfs are also formed autoflowering which, to switch to flowering, do not use the change of light but bloom automatically after a certain time.

In the crosses, the flavors are also crossed, forming the sweet and fruity flavors that consumers love so much.

Males and females

Cannabis like man has one sex: male and female.

Males produce seeds while females produce pollen to inseminate males. Male cannabis has a low percentage of thc so it is not used to produce weed but only to produce seeds.

While the female is the plant used to produce the weed or smoke etc.

Seed Categories

Before buying any type of cannabis seed, you should know that there are various categories and each category has a particular method of growth and cultivation.

  1. Feminized: they are semi-female only those that have the most concentration of thc were created by breder degli and are comfortable because they should not be divided between males and females.
  2. Male: it has a low percentage of thc they have little or nothing and are used only to make oil and products for legal consumption or seeds and can be legally planted in Italy and many other countries of the European Union.
  3. Regular: among these seeds males and females are found randomly and the males are then divided and eliminated in the early flowering period; They have the only advantage that females yield little more than feminized ones because they have more resistant genetics.
  4. Dwarfs: they are seeds that have a height of no more than one meter and usually grow quite quickly, have a lower yield in quantity.
  5. Auto flowering dwarfs: they are seeds that come from crosses of sativas or indica with ruderalis, for this reason they are low plants and bloom after a certain period making the job much easier (for some reasons that you will learn in future articles), they are the fastest to grow but have a lower yield in quantity.
  6.  Outdoors: seeds with genetics suitable for outdoor growing
  7.  Iindoor: seeds with genetics suitable for growing inside

So with all these categories, someone might feel confused and not know what to choose.

Usually those who grow indoors choose feminized varieties, the cultivation period is 3 months but the yields are higher.

While those who want to grow outdoors will certainly choose a feminized genetics suitable for outdoor, ending their cycle in about 4 months.

Then there are the growers who are in a hurry, they will definitely grow autoflowering dwarfs because they finish their cycle in about 2 months and don't need a change of light like feminized.

While male and regular plants are used by commercial growers because they need special care or by those who want to produce seeds, oil, pasta and other legal products in almost any country.

Methods Of Growing Cannabis

Growing cannabis in soil pots: Growing on the ground is simpler, more organic, less expensive but the yields are lower in quantity and quality of the final product.

Growing hydroponic cannabis: It is mainly used indoors because it maximizes the yield with the lamps, consists in growing the plants in various tubes or plants in which the roots of the plant are suspended with a defenseless layer such as: rock wool, expanded clay etc.

In this defenseless layer or tube water is passed constantly or almost, the water is in an underlying tank and is used in a continuous circle for minimum waste.

The tank contains water and fertilizers in microelements that are the nourishment of the plant which, with particular techniques, are mixed to pump the plants to the maximum.

This type of cultivation is very complicated, you have to study enough, but the yields are up to seven times higher compared to cultivation with soil.

On the other hand, however, we need expensive systems that consume a lot of energy.

Growing aeroponic cannabis: very complicated, it can be performed correctly only after having learned hydroponics and some notions of chemistry and having a lot of experience with pipes and electrical material necessary for cultivation, but the yield is maximum.

Aeroponic cultivation is not very different from hydroponic cultivation, the roots of the plant are suspended in an airtight chamber that is sprayed with solutions of water and microelements.

In this hermetic chamber there is a drain that is connected to a tank to pick up the water, immediately afterwards through a pump and various sprayers it is nebulized on the roots in a continuous cycle.

This allows for a greater supply of oxygen to the root system and that is why there are incredible yields and qualities.

Expenditure on growing cannabis

You should know that growing cannabis at home can be quite expensive but there are methods to save and they will be listed under the heading (simple) in the links at the bottom of the page, here I will generally put the expense with each set up for a plant.

Although some things shouldn't be bought twice in case of multiple plants.

There are a lot of things to calculate and the plant needs to cycle:

  1. water;
  2. light (energy dispersed in giving light) only at home;
  3. light (the lamp) only in the house;
  4. earth nourishment only cultivation in the ground (some are inserted in the ground others must be taken separately);
  5. basic nutrients nutrients that give the plant the basic sustenance;
  6. additional nutrients they are additional nutrients that increase yield and quality each one has a characteristic;
  7. vasi just land;
  8. vessel system (aeroponic hydroponics only);
  9. root  (they serve to contain the seed in germination and decanting);
  10. various useful electronic or plastic gadgets these go to taste for the most part;
  11. electronic tools (in hydroponics and aeroponics some tools are fundamental).

Set up ground a plant outside (cannabis seed 10 $ water 10 $ earth 5 $ pot 5 $ supplementary nourishment from 0 to 70 $ various pieces of electronics from 0 to 200 $ root 5 $) total spending from 30 to 300.

Set up a ground plant in the house  (cannabis seed $ 10 water $ 10 soil $ 5 light $ 30 or $ 60 lamp $ 60 to $ 120 supplementary nutrition $ 20 to $ 70 various pieces of electronics $ 0 to $ 200 root $ 5 pot 5 $) total spending from 125 to 460.

Set up for hydroponics at home (cannabis seed 10 $ water 10 $ unarmed layers 10 $ light 30 or 60 $ lamp 60 or 120 $ basic nourishment 20 $ supplementary nourishment 0 or 100 $ system pots 30 or 60 $ root 5 $ electronic tools 100 $ additional electronic tools 0 a 200).

total spending from 280 to 700 you know that for hydroponics there are also customized devices that cost a lot of money, but that in this type of systems everything can be automated.

The 3 Stages Of Cultivation

There are three steps to complete a cannabis grow:

  • the first is the germination of the seed;
  • the second is the vegetative phase;
  • the third is that of flowering.

Germination Of Cannabis

Germination is the phase in which the seed is taken and hatched. There are various methods of hatching a seed but, in my opinion, the simplest is to plant it in a glass full of soil and lightly wet it with a syringe once a day.

When the first leaves have come out of the earth, the glass will be cut in half and the plant will be transplanted into a larger pot.

In this article you can find another more scientific method studied for the earth while in this article you can find another method for hydroponic cultivation.

Vegetative phase

At this stage the plant will be placed under a light source if grown at home an agro hps will / will be an adequate source, while the sun is always the best source of light outside.

The hours of indoor light in this phase must be 18.

The plant will be watered abundantly once a day in crops with earth, if it is grown with hydroponic systems the watering varies according to the plant used.

This phase varies a lot according to the seed, in fact the indoor vegetative phase lasts about three weeks while outdoors it can last two months, if instead you use self-flowering plants the vegetative phase always lasts three weeks.

Flowering phase

Flowering is that part of cultivation in which the plant begins to form flowers or seeds if male.

Regular and feminized plants enter flowering with the change of light so to switch to flowering outdoors it is necessary that the hours of light decrease, in this way the plant will switch to flowering.

While if you grow indoors you just need to change the hours the lamp is switched on and then gradually pass from 18 hours on to just 12 hours on.

Autoflowering plants do not need the change of light and therefore can be left at 18 hours on because they are plants that grow in arctic climates and therefore need many hours of light for a short period, in any case they grow even with 10 hours of light.

For watering, they must always be done in the same way but specific fertilizers for the phase must be added to the water this article I talk about fertilizers on the ground and the phase in which to use them while in another article I talk about fertilizers for hydroponics.

The flowering phase can last a long time, for example indoor feminized take about a month and two weeks while outdoor ones take two months and a few weeks.

Autoflowering about a month.

When flowering the plants will begin to form the flower, after several weeks the flower will develop and beautiful buds will come out, while in the last phase of flowering the leaves should turn yellow that will be the signal that it is time to harvest and dry .

In this article you can see how cannabis is cut, dried and cured to produce good quality weed.

All the tricks for a higher yield

There are various tricks to have a higher yield in quality and quantity, the thing that has the most value is certainly the ph then there is the ec and finally all those parameters of temperature and humidity.

A very important thing are the lamps !! If grown indoors these will provide the energy necessary for all the growth processes of the plant.

Besides these tricks there are various methods to modify the shape of the plant, such as: topping, fimming, lst.

And various methods of growing: scrog, sea of green, etc.

The genetics that are used will have a huge impact on the yield so it must be decided carefully.

Above you can find a menu with each item described for all these tricks as well as a menu for each type of cultivation and much more.

On this site specializing in products for growing you can find everything and you will get a more detailed idea of which products are needed to grow and their prices link.

On the internet you can find many varieties of cannabis, just type: “seed bank” on google and we will find a huge variety of sites. These are the ones I think are the most serious   http://www.dutch-passion.nl/   https://sensiseeds.com/it  because they have very different varieties and have been there for years.

However, know that there are specialized seed shops all over the globe, so google and type seedshop for your country or region, you will surely find what you need.

I want to clarify that if you reside in Italy, the sale of seeds is regulated while cultivation is a crime.

  1. Hi Samuel all very useful and clear. I have a question, I have decanted the plant after 3 months from germination, now I notice that the leaves are sagging, will I have damaged the roots? What do you advise me to do?

    1. hello during the transplant it is very easy to damage or create radical shocks, my advice is to give a good watering definitely the problem and that now it cannot absorb the necessary amount of water.
      moreover, to remedy this problem and better to keep the plant in a place with high humidity until it recovers, you can also use pot covers and moisten them, but be careful not to keep them in the sun.
      you can finally give any root to help the roots develop faster
